How to Build a Website for Your Business: Builders, WordPress or an Agency, Step by Step

By the RED SAG team · Updated · 8 min read

To build a website for your business, decide what the site must do (bring enquiries, take bookings or sell online), register a domain in your own name, choose how it will be built (a website builder, WordPress or a developer), prepare your text and photos, then build, test on a phone and connect it to Google Search Console and your Google Business Profile. A simple business site can be live in one to three weeks.

Which route suits you depends on your time, your budget and how much the site has to do. A website builder is fastest to start. WordPress gives you more control for a modest cost. Hiring a freelancer or agency costs more upfront but saves your time and usually gets a better result for anything beyond a few pages. This guide walks through each option honestly, the steps in the order that avoids rework, and what things typically cost in India in 2026.

Three ways to build a website

Before you pick a tool, be clear about the job. Most small business sites have one of three jobs: help people find and trust you and then call or WhatsApp you; let people book or order something; or sell products online with payment. The first is simple on any platform. The second and third need features that decide which route makes sense.

The table below compares the three common routes for a typical five to ten page business site. Prices are rough 2026 ranges; subscription plans change often and many are billed in US dollars, so check current pricing before you commit.

Freelancer or agency₹15,000–₹75,000 for a business siteHosting and domain, plus an optional care planAnyone short on time, or sites with bookings, payments or integrationsVague quotes, and domains registered in the vendor's name

Step 1: Decide what the site must achieve

Write one sentence: "This website exists so that…". For a plumber in Coimbatore it might be "people nearby can see what we fix and call us". For a garment exporter it might be "overseas buyers can see our capacity and certifications and request samples". That sentence decides which pages you need, what goes at the top of the home page and what counts as success.

Then list the actions a visitor should take, in order of importance: call, WhatsApp, fill in a form, book a slot, buy. Every page should make the most important action easy to find on a phone.

Step 2: Register a domain in your own name

Choose a short domain that is easy to say over the phone. A .in or .com usually costs ₹500–₹1,500 a year, though renewal prices are often higher than the first-year offer. Register it yourself, or make sure whoever does it uses your name and email and gives you the registrar login. A domain registered in a vendor's account is the single most common reason small businesses lose control of their website.

Use the same domain for business email (such as you@yourbusiness.in). It looks more professional than a free email address and keeps working if staff leave.

Step 3: Choose the platform

If you need a simple site quickly and want to do it yourself, a website builder is fine. If you want to own the site, add features over time or write a blog, WordPress is the usual choice. If you need to sell online, look at Shopify or WooCommerce. A custom-coded site (for example on Next.js) makes sense when speed, security or custom features matter more than editing everything yourself, or when the site is part of a larger web application.

Whatever you pick, check two things first: can you export your content if you leave, and can you edit text and photos without calling a developer?

Step 4: Plan pages and write the content

Content is the step that delays most websites, so start it early. A typical small business site needs a home page, one page per main service or product range, an about page, a contact page and the legal pages. Write in the words your customers use, not industry jargon, and put prices or price ranges on the site if you can: it filters out poor-fit enquiries and builds trust.

Use real photos of your premises, team, products and finished work wherever possible. Stock photos are acceptable for backgrounds, but customers can tell the difference, and real photos are also what Google Business Profile visitors expect to see.

  • Home: what you do, where, for whom, and the main action (call, WhatsApp, enquire).
  • Services or products: one page each, with who it is for, what is included and typical cost or timeline.
  • About: who runs the business, how long you have been operating, registrations or certifications you actually hold.
  • Contact: phone, WhatsApp, email, address with map, hours and a short form.
  • Legal: privacy policy, and terms, refund and shipping policies if you sell online.

Step 5: Design for phones first

In India most visitors will see your site on a phone, often on mobile data. Design and review every page on a phone first. Keep the call and WhatsApp buttons visible, keep text readable without zooming, and compress images so pages load quickly. A theme or template is perfectly fine for most small businesses; spend the effort on clear content and good photos rather than animations.

Step 6: Build, then add the essentials

Once pages are in place, add the pieces that make the site work as a business tool. These are easy to forget in the rush to launch, and each one is cheaper to set up now than to fix later.

  • HTTPS (a free SSL certificate from your host is fine for most sites).
  • A contact form that actually delivers to an inbox someone checks, and a WhatsApp click-to-chat link.
  • A page title and meta description for each page, written for people, not stuffed with keywords.
  • Google Search Console and an analytics tool, so you can see which searches bring visitors.
  • A link to and from your Google Business Profile, with the same name, address and phone number on both.
  • Automatic backups and, on WordPress, automatic updates for minor releases.

Step 7: Test and launch

Before you announce the site, test it as a customer would: on an Android phone and an iPhone if you can, on slow mobile data, and on a laptop. Submit every form, tap every phone number, check spelling on every page and ask someone outside the business to find your prices and contact details. Run the home page through Google's PageSpeed Insights and fix anything flagged as poor.

If you are replacing an old site, set up redirects from old page addresses to the new ones so you keep any Google rankings and links the old site had earned.

Step 8: Keep it alive

A website is not finished at launch. Update prices, photos and opening hours when they change, add a short page or post when you launch a new service, and check Search Console once a month for errors. On WordPress, plugins and themes need updates to stay secure. If you would rather not do this yourself, a care plan from your developer covers updates, backups and small changes for a monthly fee.

The cost to build a website in India

Doing it yourself costs the least in money and the most in time. For a first-time owner, expect to spend several evenings or weekends on a builder or WordPress site, most of it on content. Hiring someone typically costs ₹15,000–₹75,000 for a small business site, more for online stores and custom features. Our full breakdown is in the website development cost in India guide.

For reference, our own starter business website (up to 5 pages, mobile-friendly, enquiry form, WhatsApp button and basic on-page SEO) costs ₹15,000–₹25,000 plus GST, and a theme-based online store starts at ₹35,000. Domain and hosting are billed at actual cost and registered in your name. Other providers price differently, so compare what is included, not just the total.

Mistakes that are expensive to undo

Most website problems we are asked to fix come from a handful of early decisions. None of them is expensive to get right at the start.

  • Domain, hosting or builder account registered in someone else's name.
  • Pirated ("nulled") themes or plugins, which often carry malware.
  • No backups, or backups stored on the same server as the site.
  • Launching a redesign without redirects from the old page addresses.
  • A beautiful home page with no clear way to call, message or buy on a phone.
  • Paying 100% upfront without a written scope or a staging link to review.

Frequently asked questions

Can I build a website for free?

You can start for free on some website builders and on Google Sites, but free plans usually show the platform's branding and use its address rather than your own domain. For a business, paying for your own domain (around ₹500–₹1,500 a year) and a basic plan or hosting is worth it, because it looks more credible and you can move later.

Is WordPress or a website builder better for a small business?

A website builder is easier if you want a simple site quickly and do not want to think about hosting or updates. WordPress gives you more control, more features and easier moves between hosts, but you or someone you pay must keep it updated. If you plan to grow the site with a blog, bookings or a shop, WordPress or Shopify is usually the better long-term choice.

How long does it take to build a website?

A simple business site can be built in one to three weeks once the content is ready. A WordPress site with a custom design usually takes three to six weeks, and an online store four to eight. In practice, waiting for text, photos and approvals causes more delay than the building itself.

Do I need to know coding to build a website?

No. Website builders and WordPress let you build a complete business site without code. Coding helps with custom features, performance tuning and fixing problems, which is where a developer earns their fee.

How much does a website cost in India if I hire someone?

A small business site typically costs ₹15,000–₹75,000 in 2026, depending on design, number of pages, content help and who builds it. E-commerce and custom features cost more. Add a few thousand rupees a year for the domain and hosting, and a monthly care plan if you want someone to handle updates.
