Google Business Profile verification proves to Google that you run the business at the address or in the area you listed. Google chooses which methods to offer each profile; today the most common is a short video recording showing your location, signage and proof that you manage the business, with phone, SMS, email or a live video call offered for some profiles. Until a profile is verified, it may not appear on Maps, and you cannot fully manage it or respond to reviews.
Most failed verifications come from preventable problems: a business name with extra keywords, an address that does not match the signboard, a video that misses the key shots, or a location Google does not consider eligible. This guide covers setting up the profile so it passes, each verification method, a shot list for the video, and what to do if verification fails or the profile is suspended. Google changes the process from time to time, so treat the Business Profile Help Center as the final word.
Google Business Profile setup that passes verification
Before you create a profile, search Google Maps for your business. A listing may already exist, created by a customer or from public data. Claim it instead of creating a duplicate; duplicates are a common reason for verification trouble. If someone else, such as a former employee or an old agency, controls the listing, use the request-access option.
Create or claim the profile using a Google account the business owns, not a staff member's personal account. You can add managers later. Then fill in the details with care, because verification reviewers compare them with what they see in your video or documents.
- Business name: exactly as on your signboard and documents, with no added keywords, city names or slogans.
- Category: the most specific accurate primary category.
- Address: the full address with PIN code, matching your signboard and GST or shop registration, and the map pin on the right building.
- Service-area businesses (plumbers, tutors, home services): hide the address and set the areas you serve.
- Phone number and website: a number answered during business hours, and your own site if you have one.
- Hours: the hours you are actually open to customers.
Who is eligible
Google Business Profile is for businesses that meet customers in person, at their premises or at the customer's location, during stated hours. Online-only businesses are generally not eligible for a Maps listing. Virtual offices, and shared or co-working spaces without permanent signage and staff present during business hours, often fail verification. If you work from home and visit customers, register as a service-area business and hide your home address rather than listing it as a shop.
The verification methods
You do not choose freely; Google shows the methods available for your profile, based on the business type, location and history. You may be offered one or several.
| Method | How it works | Tips |
|---|---|---|
| Video recording | Record and upload one continuous video from the Google Maps app or Business Profile | Most common today; follow the shot list below |
| Live video call | Show the same things to a Google support person on a scheduled call | Have everything ready and good network coverage |
| Phone or SMS | Receive a code on the business phone number | Only offered for some profiles; the number must be the one on the profile |
| Receive a code at an email address, often on your domain | Only offered for some profiles | |
| Postcard | A code posted to the address | Less common now; can take weeks to arrive |
| Instant or bulk | Automatic for sites verified in Search Console, or bulk verification for 10+ locations | Only for eligible accounts |
What to show in a verification video
The video should be a single continuous recording with no cuts or edits; about a minute is usually enough. It should prove three things: where you are, that the business exists there, and that you manage it. Plan it before you press record, and record in daylight during business hours if you can.
- Location: start outside and show the street, nearby shops or landmarks, and the street sign or building name if there is one.
- Business: show your permanent signboard with the business name, then walk in and show the premises, products, equipment or work area.
- Proof of management: show something only the owner or manager can do or has, such as unlocking the shop door or shutter, opening the billing software, or showing a GST certificate, shop licence or utility bill in the business name.
- Keep your face out of it if you prefer; the reviewer needs to see the business, not you.
- Service-area businesses without a shop: show your branded vehicle or equipment, tools, business documents and any signage you use.
After you submit
Video verifications are reviewed by Google and usually take a few working days, though it can be longer. While the review is pending, avoid editing the business name, address or category, because changes can restart the process. If the status does not change after a week or two, check the profile for messages and contact Business Profile support through the Help Center.
Once verified, keep the core details stable. Changing the name, address or primary category later can trigger re-verification. Update hours for holidays and add photos, products and posts as normal; these do not usually cause problems.
Why Google Business Profile verification fails
When verification is rejected, Google rarely gives a detailed reason, but the causes are usually one of a handful.
- The name on the profile does not match the signboard, or has keywords added to it.
- The address is a virtual office or co-working desk, or the pin is on the wrong building.
- The video is edited, too short, filmed only indoors, or does not show proof of management.
- There is no permanent signage, only a banner or a sticker.
- A duplicate profile exists for the same business.
- The business is online-only or does not serve customers in person.
If verification fails or the profile is suspended
If verification is rejected, fix what the likely cause is (the name, the pin, the signage, the video) and try again with the method offered. Do not create a new profile for the same business to get around it; that usually makes things worse.
If a verified profile is suspended, it has usually been flagged for a policy problem such as a keyword-stuffed name, an ineligible address or suspicious edits. Correct the profile so it follows Google's guidelines, then submit an appeal from the Business Profile, with evidence such as photos of the signboard and premises, your GST or shop registration and a utility bill. Appeals are reviewed by Google and can take some days.
Be wary of anyone who phones claiming to be from Google and asks for payment to verify, restore or rank your profile. Google does not charge for Business Profile verification.

Frequently asked questions
How long does Google Business Profile verification take?
Code-based methods such as phone, SMS or email can be instant. Video verifications are reviewed by Google and usually take a few working days, sometimes longer. Postcards, where offered, can take a couple of weeks to arrive.
Can I verify my business without a shop or office?
Yes, if you serve customers at their location. Set the profile up as a service-area business, hide your address and list the areas you serve. In the video, show your branded vehicle or equipment, tools and business documents. Businesses that only operate online are generally not eligible for a Maps listing.
Why am I only offered video verification?
Google decides which methods to offer based on the business category, location and account history, and video has become the most common option. You cannot choose a different method, but a well-planned one-minute video usually passes.
Is Google Business Profile verification free?
Yes. Creating, verifying and managing a Google Business Profile is free. Google Ads is a separate, optional paid product. Anyone asking for payment to verify your profile is not Google.
Do I need to verify again if I move to a new address?
Usually yes. Changing the address, and sometimes the business name or primary category, can trigger re-verification. Update the details when the move actually happens, make sure the new signboard is up, and be ready to record a new video.
